The UK CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme became law in 2008 and was introduced in April 2010. Since its introduction, there has been pressure to simplify and improve the scheme. On 30th of June 2011 DECC (UK Department of Energy and Climate Change) announced its proposals from its recent consultation on possible simplification.
This whitepaper reviews the key elements of DECC’s proposals. It identifies those parts of the CRC legislation that DECC is seeking to change as well as those that those key elements of the Scheme that DECC intends to retain following the consultation process. Finally it considers the likely implications of these changes for Suppliers of goods that can improve energy efficiency within the affected organisations. Our primary conclusions is that despite the intense lobbying by stakeholders, CRC will remain a key plank of the UK Government ‘s Climate Change and Energy policy and in the conclusion of this paper we identify four actions that innovative supplies should take in order to capitalise upon the large market opportunities catalysed by this legislation.
